Reviewed medical and societal changes and formulated recommendations in response to these developments, especially in the area of managed care.-To supplement the existing publications with a comprehensive set of standards based on clinical experience and an evolving scientific base of knowledge.-Significant changes:
-While the standards are minimums, the intent is to optimize design using available resources, and to provide health care for the infant in a setting that promotes the central role of the family and the needs of the staff.-Recommended standards address the delivery room.
-Recommended standards address the use of single-family rooms and operating facilites within the NICU.
-Recommended standards address the acoustical characteristics of the NICU in order to provide an optimal environment for infants who are in a significant stage of auditory development and also for the caregivers.
