Special Features: St. Louis Children’s Hospital was the first children’s hospital west of the Mississippi River. Founded in 1879, it is the 7th oldest children’s hospital in the country. It serves children from all over the world. The hospital was originally run by 8 women in a small, rented house with 15 beds. Today it serves more than 250,000 patients each year from around the world. St. Louis Children’s Hospital is the pediatric teaching hospital for Washington University School of Medicine and is nationally recognized for its physician training and research.
