Case Study 1

Sport and Spine Therapy of Marin

ARCHITECTS: Couture Architecture
LOCATION: Novato, California

Couture Architecture, a design-build firm based out of San Anselmo, California designed this small sports medicine/physical therapy center for Sport and Spine of Marin.
"Bright yellow marquis visible from the street acts as a calling card for a sports medicine, physical therapy center. Inside, strong and sturdy shapes act as a redefined backdrop for dancing fabric forms. Fabric shapes are used as space articulators and privacy screens, as well as to add play, choreographing the images of motion found in athletic movements." (Couture Architecture)

LESSONS LEARNED:
  • Small scale stand-alone rehabilitation facilities can have diverse and interesting locations (in rehabilitated buildings, etc); visits to facilites like Sport and Spine feel more like a trip to the gym or masseuse than a hospital visit to patients.
  • Aesthetically pleasing design elements (i.e. the backdrop of floating yellow shapes) can have double uses as functional elements, in this case, they are being used as "walls" or privacy barriers.
